About The Event
This is the most joyful and awe-inspiring service of the Orthodox Christian year. The church begins in complete darkness, as the faithful gather in quiet anticipation. Just before midnight, a single light emerges from the altar—the light of the Resurrected Christ. One by one, candles are lit, and the light spreads through the congregation as we sing “Come receive the light from the unwaning Light…”
The priest proclaims the triumphant words: “Christ is Risen!” (“Christos Anesti!”) and the church erupts with joyful shouts, and the singing of the Resurrection hymn. The faithful join in a resurrection procession, and the darkness is overcome by light, sound, and celebration.
This deeply moving service is both mystical and joyous, marking the transition from death to life, from mourning to resurrection. It is the heart of the Paschal celebration—and an unforgettable spiritual experience.
